Portable Appliance Testing
Health and Safety regulations require that electrical appliances are safe and maintained to prevent harm to workers. Many equipment manufacturers recommend testing at regular intervals, usually every 2 years, to ensure continual safety.
Fire Safety Managers Ltd can test all your electrical equipment in accordance with Electricity at Work Regulation 1989 (EAWR) Regulation 4(2) to ensure that you remain compliant and your equipment is safe to use. This legislation instructs all work premises and establishments where members of the public attend or reside, to have electrical appliances tested by a competent person.
What is Portable Appliance Testing?
Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. Most defects can be found by visual examination but some types of defect can only be found by testing. However, it is essential to understand that visual examination is an essential part of the process because some types of electrical safety defect can’t be detected by testing alone.
How frequently do I need to have my appliances tested?
The frequency of inspection and testing depends upon the type of equipment and theenvironment it is used in. For example, a power tool used on a construction site should be examined more frequently than a lamp in a hotel bedroom. For general Office or Household items it is recommended they are tested every 2 years. For guidance on suggested frequencies of inspection and testing, see: Maintaining portable and transportable electrical equipment.
