The unexpected phenomenon that took us all by surprise.
We all thought Nintendo were sleeping, but in July 2016 they awoke! An augmented reality version of the classic game and famous television series was created and developed for smart phones. People downloaded it in their masses and Pokémon GO has been named the hottest app of 2016. It’s all fun and games. But is it really? Let’s take a closer look…
Phones can’t swim – Source
As people are distracted by ‘catching them all’, it leaves them unaware of their immediate real-life surroundings. While they are holding out their phone, eyes fixed on their screen, it is the perfect scenario for thieves to strike. One thief in particular stole a players phone and threw it in a nearby lake. This made very little sense as it wasn’t beneficial to either of the parties involved.
Men fall off cliff – Source
Hunting Pokémon can lead you to amazing destinations. Imagine being on the edge of a cliff overlooking a huge ocean… and then falling off. Two men fell off a 90-foot cliff while on the hunt for these fictional fantasy creatures. This resulted in them both surviving but being treated for trauma.
Stabbed while distracted – Source
Who hangs around parks at midnight? The homeless? Someone after a heavy night out? This time it was a Pokémon GO player. Unfortunately the player got stabbed several times in the upper torso and was attacked by five or six men as he was distracted by the game, but fortunately the victim survived.
Players mistaken as thieves – Source
It’s late at night. You see two people right outside of your house. You hear one of them say “Did you get anything?” What would you do? This happened to a man in Florida. He shot at the two people assuming that they were thieves that just robbed his house, but in fact, they were playing Pokemon GO, seeing if they had caught any Pokémon.
Players being ‘purposely’ ran over – Source
While crossing the road, keeping your eyes fixed to the screen of your phone probably isn’t the best of ideas. Unfortunately for a Pokémon GO player in Maine, a lady was accused of intentionally hitting them with her car. Road safety is definitely something that needs to be thought about by players of the game.
Driving under the influence of Pokémon – Source
People get addicted to all sorts of things. While driving, all of our attention should be on the road, our surroundings and our control of the vehicle. Playing Pokémon GO while driving definitely can’t go down well. In one drivers case, it went horribly wrong. The driver crashed into a police car… He may have lost his license but at least he’s still got his Pokémon GO account!
Wanted criminal walks into the hands of Police – Source
Pokémon GO. Love it, hate it. It made the police of Michigan’s job very easy one day. The police station had a feature of the game implemented into its building. A ‘gym’ in Pokémon GO is a place in real life where players can congregate and battle one another. A wanted criminal, playing the game, stumbled across this special ‘gym’ and was arrested on site. That’s one more criminal taken off the streets thanks to Pokémon GO!
If you enjoy the game so much you cannot take your eyes of the screen, please do one thing…stay alert to your surroundings, in reality, people are a lot more dangerous then Pokémon and take advantage of those not paying attention.
